Familia Alcyoniidae

Lamouroux, 1812

Description
Colonies encrusting or erect, often produced into finger-like lobes; contractile. Secondary budding occurring only within limits of coenenchyme, never on anthocodia.

Remarks
Of the three British species of this family only Alcyonium digitatum is common, the others being local and mostly sublittoral in distribution. Few, if any, positive distinguishing characters are available but a careful comparison of such features as growth form, colour and habitat should enable an accurate identification.
