Description
Actinostolidae possessing a broad adherent basal disc; column lacking tubercles and not differentiated into regions. Sphincter strong, able to close off the top of the column in contraction. Tentacles without basal thickenings on their aboral sides. Tentacles and pairs of mesenteries of first two cycles differing in number: six in the primary cycle, 10-12 in the secondary cycle; mesenteries of these two cycles perfect, the first 16 pairs being sterile. More mesenteries present proximally than distally. Mesenteries of the younger, imperfect cycles unequally developed in size.

Type-species: Stomphia coccinea (O. F. Muller, 1776)
