Description
Acontiaria possessing a mesogloeal sphincter muscle and lacking ectodermal longitudinal muscle. Column not differentiated into regions, or divided into scapus (with periderm) and scapulus; never with a parapet and fosse. Column in most genera with cinclides, sometimes bearing suckers or solid papillae or tubercles. Mesenteries not differentiated into macrocnemes and microcnemes. Nematocysts of acontia p-mastigophores and b-mastigophores (normal type).

This is a family of generally delicate, often brightly coloured and intricately patterned anemones; several species are common in British waters.
